Re: RHO Leads Q,K

If RHO leads the K, what exactly would you be finessing for? You have the A - the only higher card. There might be cases where if RHO has bid only one that you might want to let this go through. The reason for this play would be so your RHO would not be able to get back on lead (presumably he is lea...

Re: Lowman

Essentially, here is my question. When you are playing "lowman", is it your "obligation" to always go after lowman even when it will hurt your chances to WIN the game (i do NOT mean come in 2nd or 3rd - I mean WIN = FIRST PLACE). In the example I gave I think it would increase your chance of winning...

Lowman

I have only played spades here in HW, but I have been thinking of having a go at hearts here. I have seen several (passionate) posts on lowman game and read the game described as "always" trying to give points to lowman. Say the score is something like: 40, 43, 46, 60 (my score is 43) and I have a c...

Re: Skip Trumps?

Hard to answer with no specifics of your hand, the other bids, or the cards already played. Here are some ideas: - If / when you trump, you probably want to trump very high. Don't just let your LHO gobble up your small and medium trumps. - Watch what your pard plays. When he plays a high card, he sh...

Modes

Throughout the game you bid and play in many different modes. If you have a nice lead, you may bid in cautious mode. If you are behind you may bid in aggressive mode (including riskier nils) or rope-a-dope mode (bid a little low and set em). Some players start out in aggressive mode hoping to get an...

Re: Another Myth I need clarified please

Hello again Tooth : ) The game was not played at HW - no game log. I assume they bid the nils because they thought the risks were justified and that they would be successful. My observation was that had they not bid any of the nils, they would have still bid about the same total as our team did. Car...

Re: Another Myth I need clarified please

Whoa there Spooky Tooth. First of all, I did not suggest AT ALL that they got better cards (or that we got better cards). Final score was: Us 528, Them 252 We did not get set or bag out, so we bid 520 points. The opponents bagged out once, got set on a 6 bid, and got set on 2 nils. Thus they bid 860...

Re: Another Myth I need clarified please

I played a game last night that was emblematic of the point I was making earlier about the less skilled teams bidding more nils. In the course of a 9 hand game our opponents bid 4 nils and we bid none. We managed to set a bid of theirs, bagged them once and set 2 of their nils. We found many ways to...

Re: Another Myth I need clarified please

Another factor may be that the less skilled team will, on average, bid more nils than the better team. This may make it seem that the less skilled team is "getting better cards". Why do I say that the less skilled team will, on average, bid nil more often? The less skilled team is more likely to get...

Re: First hand play question

Thanks for your reply Jay. It seems that everyone is in agreement that the cases where you would overtake pard are rare, but you put a little more meat on it and gave good examples. Your discussion of why pard may have led the K was also informative. Maybe I did not follow your part C. (signalling p...

Re: First hand play question

"The bids are negligible" That is quite a statement. The bids are key when we are trying to figure out the holdings in other hands. However, in the given scenario I do not see a bid scenario (except maybe if there were a nil, but that would have been mentioned for sure) where playing the A here woul...
