Re: Just an amazing game

I watched this again. Looks to me that this crazy nil was able to get by is that the person with the highest spade holding (me) had an even distribution of cards and was seated to the right of the niller. As a result, there was no way for me to dump my spades. I ran out of hearts, but Galt was out t...

Re: Social Skills

Sorry to hear you had a bad experience. The nasty behavior improves steadily at higher levels and things are pretty civilized in most games over 1700/1750.

It was nice having you around and hope we see you back!

I'm leaving for Europe next week but will be back in early Sept.

Re: Just an amazing game

Yep, it was amazing. I was the RHO in this game. I bid two because I knew Galt was trying to force me to overbid to set me. After the nil sailed through, my pard hated me and started yelling "ALWAYS BID THE WIN." But I didn't have the four and Galt would definitely have set me. I need to watch this ...

Re: abandon game when ops bid 12 to lose

I just wanted to say that I was in a game today where this happened, and I think the guides had an excellent strategy which I'm reporting here in case others want to do the same. Here's what happened: We set the opponents on the first hand, putting us way head. They started calling each other names,...

Useless Nils on Last Hand

I'd be interested in hearing others opinions on useless nils on the last hand. I'm talking about a situation where the opponents will win the game on that hand unless you set them. For the purposes of this thread, I define a "useless" nil as one which will not give you enough points to win unless yo...

Re: Becoming a guide..please respond

Thanks for the clarification on the process. I was wondering what the time commitment is in being a guide. Does it just mean you help when you are online anyway, or would you need to commit to being on at certain hours or times of day? I also wondered what is needed to become a greeter. Are greeters...

Re: What's your "deal breaker" in a partner?

I look for partners who want to go for the set on 11 hands. It's a total dealbreaker for me if someone is primarily focused on bagging the opponents. It's amazing how many people use bag avoidance as a primary strategy even in 1600 and 1650 rooms. There are far fewer in 1700 plus rooms but even ther...

Re: "As It Turns Out"

Good post--

One of the things I appreciate most in a partner is the ability to know when you made the right move even if it didn't pan out. I actually like good constructive criticism but only from people who are looking at the big picture, not just on how that particular hand turned out.

Re: abandon game when ops bid 12 to lose

Why not eliminate the problem by permanently banning players who do this? I've filed several reports on people who have thrown games, yet the players are still on Hardwood. In one case, the game was abandoned with a guide present after quite a bit of time and effort spent by the guide and one other ...

Re: New Spades Book

Well, as someone who is currently studying the books by Galt, Joe and Steve, I do have a suggestion for another book. How about a Quiz book? There could be three books actually--beginning, intermediate and advanced, with nothing but hands and the question "What would you do'?" The explanation in the...

Re: Avoid this Nil!

Wow, I sure want to know the answer. The only way I can think of that it could be set is if your partner has one or no spades and the opponents throw off all their spades so you get set on the last round on the 2 or 3. But I'm guessing there's more to it since you say 'avoid this nil' as if there we...
