Re: Last Hand Bid Puzzle 2

The correct bid here is 8.

One should never bid more than needed to achieve the desired outcome.

I we bid 8 and make 8 we have a tie game.

If we bid 8 and make 9 we win.

If we bid 9 and make 9 we win.

if we bid 9 and make 8 we lose.

8 allows for a win or a tie.

9 allows for a win or a loss.

Re: Last Hand Bid Puzzle

Hi all. Been awhile. From a technnical standpoint, the only bids to really consider here (independent of cards) are Nil, 4, and 7. Nil and 7 clearly are out so, even though I hate having to play a perfect hand to win a game, it seems like the only choice here. Considerations are: What does my pard's...

Re: Fixed Deals

Hey Dustin. I have not played here for a couple of years, but I imagine that the dealing algorithm is the same now as it was then. I recall these complaints going back to the late 90s. I never saw any of the players who had consistently high ratings complaining about the deals, and there were plenty...

Re: Example of slanted deals

I should state first that I have not played here in about 2 years. Around that time it became harder and harder to get higher rated games in reg pard play. Players were either leaving the site or moving to Cut. That, combined with the increasing level of quitting and uncivil behavior, caused me to m...

Re: The Ten Truths of Spades

The fact that you find the single biggest truth of Spades to be "amusing" is sad. The object of Spades is not to bid your hand, but to win the game. Players who always bid their hands are, by far, the easiest players to beat. Bidding and playing Spades is a function of the score of the game, not the...

Re: Example of slanted deals

Well, the distribution per player is changed. If the deck was set, for example, such that every other card is a good one, depending upon the cut, either one team or the other will get the good cards. You are right in that the distribution pattern will not change, but the effect on the players of tha...

Re: RESET

Happy holiday season all. Regarding the comment two up. The fact that you are concerned about the ratings yet playing pass (the variant requires a much lower level skill set than the regular game) kind of speaks volumes. Even if it did not, how does one reconcile his or her wins/losses being adverse...

Apparently you still haven't read the article.

It would take less time than doing the posts.

Re: Bug in Spades v2 that needs to be fixed

If one cares more about how he or she "looks" than about winning, he or she is probably playing the wrong game.

Re: The Ten Truths of Spades

While the original post was written to the regular partner game, much of it would apply to Cutthroat, while I guess that some of it would be less applicable. Cut certainly is nowhere near as complex as the regular game, simply due to the facts that one does not have to read his pard's intentions, ad...

Re: Bug in Spades v2 that needs to be fixed

Actually there is a time when a Bot should be bidding Nil with the Ace of Spades, just as is the case with real players. THe problem, however, is that programming Bots to play Spades well is virtually impossible because of the approach/avoidance aspect of the game cobined with the fact that it is a ...

Re: Bug in Spades v2 that needs to be fixed

I'm not sure why clicking one's mouse 3 times to get to a free Spades column that describes in detail the above referenced point would be so prohibitively difficult. I would copy paste it here, but because of the formatting of the text I don't think that it would work (that has been my experience). ...

Re: Bug in Spades v2 that needs to be fixed

Bidding Nil with the Spade Ace can actually be a very good move, but I doubt that the Bots are doing it for the right reason. Before jumping on me, take a look at the column titled "Outside the Box" on my website. All of the columns were posted by the late owner of the Tigers Spades Club in the old ...

That's a good idea.

There used to be, however, an amazing amount of spam in here. Other than reviewing potential posts I'm not sure how HW could do a better job of dealing with it.
