Re: What A Last Hand

Sorry for the layout Dustin, that is much easier to read. I see your point in bidding tight to relay information to my pard in 4th seat to help her make the best bid, but I'm still not sure I agree with max bidding out of my hand for a couple reasons. First off, let's imagine East and South swapped...

Re: What A Last Hand

For some reason this layout looks backwards to me, so let me repost it. N/S 444 E/W 410. W opens with 5: :spade:AJ6 :heart:A98 :diamond:KQ4 :club:KJ109 N bids 4 :spade:KQ432 :heart:KQ :diamond:AJ97 :club:64 East Nils: :spade:75 :heart:AQ52 :diamond:10853 :club:873 South Holds :spade:1098 :heart:1043...

Re: LAST HAND BIDDING

954 753 AJ72 J108 Your bid is fine. Last thing you want to do is go set in this situation. Just some bad luck here, as what are the odds they bag you perfectly and make bid? Surely partner figured the opponents were underbidding quite a bit and didn't want to risk a set. There is no reason to "push"...

Rusinow Leads

It's been discussed for many years which card is correct to lead from AK holdings. Many spades players prefer the A lead. It is a "safe" lead is the view of these players. This preference has some merits, however with it partner has no idea if you are leading from AK or an unsupported ace. Most expe...

Re: Third Seat Last Hand Bidding

It is too bad these forums are less active. I agree with everything that's been said. The one interesting aspect of considering a bluff nil here is that you 'may' force West into bidding a nasty nil. Because the prospects of making 7 look dismal at best, I'd seriously entertain the thought of a nil ...

Re: Popularity of Spades and its Decline

Hey Galt, thanks for the response. You're probably right, Bridge probably isn't the culprit. Poker I think could be one of the culprits, as I know of many people who changed to that game. My dad was a fanatical bridge player (before he passed), and even ran the local club up in Anchorage Alaska. Dur...

Popularity of Spades and its Decline

Ever since I started playing Spades in 1998, the game has gone through a tremendous growth in popularity and seemed to reach a peak around 2000-2001. Ever since, it appears to be slowly dying in popularity. I think the reason is two-fold. 1) Poker has gone through an explosion of popularity during t...

Re: RHO Leads Q,K

I think what he's asking is, should you hold up the ace in order to make it difficult for East to continue. In essence, there is a possible "finesse"(not really a finesse, but a positional play) on the 2nd round of the suit. Lets say the layout is: ........10xx xxx..............KQJx ........Axx East...

Re: First hand play question

The only time you'd overtake your partner's king would be to either: A) Unblock your partner (i.e. holding AQJ10, etc) B) Unblocking your own holding and want discards or a 3rd round ruff (i.e. Ax) C) Prevent bags Since none of the above apply, there is no reason to overtake the king here. If you ar...

Re: Morals and Ethics

I've never understood cheating at a card game. Or any competitive endeavor for that matter. Don't get me wrong, I'm not the most "morally" upstanding person and I do my fair share of things that might be considered immoral. I don't consider myself a "morally good person". I think the whole concept i...

Re: Unblocking

Simply put, unblocking is a play of a high card in one hand in order to allow for the continuation of a suit without disruption. Now there can be various reasons to unblock -- to maximize tricks, to avoid bags, to get off lead, etc. The play of the jack in the case you mentioned isn't necessarily to...
