I agree that the ones that are guides at HW that are trying to make a difference and trying to be fair deserve a pat on the back. It's not easy, and I, of all people, know. I was a "guide" at another site before I came to HW, and tried to be a guide at HW. I lasted a year to the day, and wanted to q...

Ramdom thought that applies at least a little: I just played a pick-up game with a person I have never played with before, and we were ahead by a little with both teams in the upper 300's. It was a 12 bid and I held Q,J,x,x of an off suit and opened the hand with the Q to finesse a bit, and trying t...

Interesting conversation, and exactly the point I was trying to bring out. Even though I view many of you as experts, I use caution as I read and decide when to use the advice that is given. If I am playing with someone I am familiar with and have a chance to decide some of these things in advance, ...

I'm not suggesting that it's any of the Guides who posted in this thread. I know who it was because I was at the table. We were in the 4th hand and we just set one of the opps' nils. At the beginning of the 5th hand, after blaming the partner for a bad nil, he bid high and left. The remaining player...

Re: abandon game when ops bid 12 to lose

The p calls a guide to get it abandoned if the ops don't abandon when asked. Angel, there are guides who do, and is why the remaining partner would call a guide to have the game abandoned. It has happened to me. If the game is in the 1st hand I will always abandon. The particular game it happened t...

Guides should NOT be forcing anyone to do anything in this situation. Guides might encourage the opponents to abandon a game because it *might* not be fair to the one who's partner bid 12 then left. But, as far as the guide knows, this might be a ploy to do just as you say, even before the game was ...

As a guide I would say that changing the profile during the game to relay messages to your pard would be considered Table talk/cheating and it would be censored. And I would recommend it stay permanently censored if it had to be censored for this reason. This is the statement I was questioning, Dus...

Well, the way I see that line of thinking is similar to this: When you tell a child not to do something, then they do it, and as punishment they get to hear you say, "Don't do it again." Where was the punishment? Something wrong there, IMO. ...and we're even talking about adults, not children. I'm g...

As I have been reading the forum lately, I couldn't help but notice something. Without getting too lengthy, I'll simply say that some people have a Classic Spades mentality while some have a Duplicate Spades mentality. This issue being discussed is a prime example. I do not play Duplicate Spades. My...

It has been addressed already, but just to throw my thoughts in... I never pay attention to game/strategy tips in profiles. They can be more of a hinderance than help. The reason I posted was to ask gramS a question. If changing a profile during a game is considered cheating, which I think everyone ...

Openshut, the Big 5 does not mean you hold the A or K of Spades if you bid 5 or more , only if you bid exactly 5. A partnership using this would bid 4 or 6 if they did not hold either, depending on hand strength. However, when using the Big 5 and your partner bids 6, it's best to adjust your bid dow...

I also feel, at least to a point, skill can overcome bad cards. Not always, though, because I agree with Galt, that there are some games you have to try to lose in order to lose. I think this presents the challenge to expert players who play less skilled players. It creates the potential for each an...

When 2 evenly matched teams square off, the luck of the cards, suit distributions and position of key count cards MEANS so much more than if a team were to play a less skilled pairing. Yep, included with my quoted comment below, what you have stated is also true. So, what Galt means (I think) is NO...

Clubs is your worse suit to lead. There's a good chance you can save your Q, and you don't want to burn your partners possible King of Clubs. Don't lead a Club. I would keep my Ace of Hearts for entry. Plus, I've won with a 10 in this situation more often than not when you get a person in 3rd positi...

Sorry, but I only read the first part of your post. But, I wanted to comment on a misconception that many have. Many think luck affects all players equally, and I thought that's where you were headed with your post. The general consensus is that of 100 games, you WIN 20 by the *luck* of the cards, y...
