"Fun & Games in Tennessee"

The Spades Connection has been around for more than ten years, and is organized by a very dedicated group of volunteers, including "+Doll" and "Catladie". This year, they will be having their event in Knoxville, TN. (a terrific town with lots of hospitality, not to mention all of the historic places of interest)

I have had the pleasure of attending several of these events, and I can
vouch for the fact that the players have a great time! There is nary a complaint - all happy faces with big smiles! Your entry fee of a hundred dollars gets you three absolutely breathtaking incredible delicious and mouth-watering buffet meals (the food is to "die for", and there are usually plenty of "seconds" for those with big appetities.) :) You will also love the spectacular choice of desserts! My favorite is the pecan pie with the home made fresh whipped cream. The cherry pie ain't too shabby, either!) Get ready to gain at least 5 pounds! All entrants get a nice souvenir Prize (usually a commemorative mug), and there are boatloads of donated merchandise Prizes as well. They have a drawing for these Prizes during the Saturday luncheon. At the conclusion of the event, the TOC winners usually receive wooden plaques, shirts, gift cards, or some other cool "stuff". - Not to mention bragging rights for the next year!Spades Connection winners in the past have gone on to win other major Spades events including the Grand Prix! By the way, just about everyone walks away with a wonderful gift from the drawing. :D

Spades Connection is unique! The Greatest Show on Earth ! Fun and Games ! You can play as much as you want or as little as you want. No rigid, "tight" schedules in which the the opponents get aggravated & antsy if you are a few minutes late for your game! Casual play is the way to go with no tension or stress! Chat and socialize all you want during your match, these people are easy - going and very friendly. And you might even learn something new, or get a recipe for a new dish you have never tasted). And - All you need to do is to win one of these "mini" qualifying tournies (8 teams / 3 rounds), and you are in the TOC. (yes, just one win in the three round qualifier, and you are in the "dance"). By the way,if you do win one of these "mini" tourneys, (and the law of averages will favor you if you enter several "minis") - you get this cool oversized button with flossy, flamboyant Spade on it, for you and your partner to wear like a Badge of Honor and proclaim that you are a "winner" ! You can see the strut of the pairs who sport their button(s) proudly. Some pairs win so many of these buttons, they look like decorated generals, and they barely have enough room to pin them on their shirts. Their strut is almost like a break dance! And if you get croaked in your mini tourney, no problem - all you have to do is is sign up for another qualifier. The bracket sheets and a nice staff person are there to serve you as you are ready for more Spades action. No muss - no fuss. Once you get your button, you can take off, bail out of the event, go to the bar for some liquid refreshment, tour the town, go back to your room to watch your favorite TV show, or head for one of the many hospitality suites! No other "live" event (Spades, Bridge, Chess, Backgammon, Euchre, etc.) has this unique "play when you want" option! Remember to be back for Saturday night's gargantuan feast! And there is always a staff person on duty to answer any questions or to make one of the rare Rulings if someone does renege or lead out of turn. There are no strict schedules - as soon as a bracket sheet is filled, those 8 teams are playing. Bam!, right on! Like clockwork! Competiton begins bright and early on Friday (there is a "warm up" game for the early birds who arrive on Thursday night). It is not uncommon for some players to play 40 or more games of Spades!

The TOC starts after the spectacular, tasty and yummy Saturday night meal. Most of the players qualify for the TOC, and for those very few who don't win a"mini" tourney, there is a "bust" or consolation event, with more exciting Prizes of course. All of the TOC qualifers' names are placed in a hat, and the pairings are drawn randomly. Who knows - you might draw a bunch of "pushover" Teams, and have a nice easy road to the Finals! The atmosphere crackles with excitement (and numerous "oooohs" and "ahhhhhhhs", )as the brackets are drawn! It is the Spades version of "March Madness". And anything can happen. One year, my partner and I were the top seeded Team with a boatload of buttons, (my polo shirt almost tore off, and I stuck myself twice with a pin,) and then we were promptly eliminated in the first round by a bottom ranked Team who made 3 late Nils in our game ! And I will never forget the year that novices, who had played dreadfully in the qualifiers, squeezed into the TOC late on Saturday afternoon (with their first button), and proceeded to "run the table" with 5 consecutive wins and some of the most incredible cards you will ever see! (I'd rather be lucky than good, too!)

It's just like the NFL - Spades Parity! "The equal opportunity" Spades gathering !

Spades Connection does not have the intense, taut competition of other "live" events, (because you are not competing for a $2500 First Prize), and the players don't always pounce on you like maurading lions on the Serengeti plains if you make a minor mistake during the play of the hand. No cash makes for a better bash! This is not a raucous party, per se; it is a gathering of some of the nicest people you will ever meet, and you will be welcomed with open arms if it is your first time there! If you are crushed and eliminated early, you will have made so many new firends. As a matter of fact the winners are usually gracious and congratulatory to the losers with comments such as - "Great game", "You guys had terrible cards", and "we were lucky". Soo- . for a super getaway, (from all of this dreadful recession stuff, as well as the dreary news of world events) and the opportunity to meet and rub elbows with warm and friendly people, and have lots of fun, check them out at their cool Web Site:

March will be here soon - get your money in and reserve your place !

Remember, if you don't want to run with the friendly dogs, stay on the porch!
