Bots have stopped playing when someone quits

Hi there --

In the first couple of weeks that I played Hardwood Backgammon, I could invite a bot when someone quit and the bot would play the game through.

Now, the bot doesn't play. No matter what state the game is in -- his turn, my turn, dice rolled, dice unrolled.

This is awful, because it means that quitting is in fact a successful way to avoid losing points. Not to mention it is frustrating as all get-out, especially in a multi-point match, to have it all come to zippo because someone quits.

Help!

Peace,
Kristen, aka PiernasMelenudas

I've noticed that when a bot replaces a player who has left, all is well until we start bearing off - if the bot rolls a double, only 1/2 of that double is played and we are stuck. I find that if I boot the bot and replace with another bot, the game continues as it should. :D

Well, that is more than I have been able to accomplish with bots lately, RiverBelle. How recently did you experience this?

In the past week, *every* time I bring in a bot, the bot doesn't do anything. Boot, new bot, lather, rinse, repeat ... to no avail. And I talked to three other players today who had the same problem.

If you've been able within the past week to get the bots to play out even part of a game after someone quits, can you remember what status the game was in? Was it your turn when you invited the bot, or the other player's?

Instead of using a bot to finish the game, we could use a 'force conceed' button instead. when someone quits a two playa game, why force remaining player to play with a bot, or wait for a sub?

Ahoy me matey... guess I've got the magic touch LOL Last worked a week ago - been gone since then and haven't tried. xtesterx, it doesn't bother me when someone leaves - i finish with a bot and go on. There is a "resign game" button for someone who plans on leaving, so I give the benefit of doubt to folks that *poof* and presume they had no choice. Sometimes, I am just like one of my nics - clueless

You've hit the nail on the head, Riverbelle -- it absolutely doesn't bother me at all when someone quits in backgammon when the bots are working. It has happened a couple of dozen times, and I had zero complaints. I, too, give the person who quit the benefit of the doubt. Lost connections happen, interruptions happen, life happens. No big deal.

But the bots are NOT working properly in the past several days, for me or for any of the players I talked to.

If the last time a bot worked for you was last week, I'd be interested to hear your experience this week.

This is an excellent idea and should be coded into the next Build.

I agree. I remember the first time someone left me in the middle of the game. I was just sitting there all by myself wondering what the heck I was supposed to do now. I really had no interest playing a bot and I wasn't sure if I would receive a quit penalty for leaving the game. I think it would make sense for that to count as a win by forfeit. Wouldn't that mirror what would happen in 'real life'? (whatever that is)

 :( :? :o :) :D   :P

When a player QUITS or leaves the game with no intention of returning, I think that the game should automatically be forfeited to the remaining player. We would have to take care, tho, that a player who gets disconnected and plans to return does not get burned in the process tho.

The simplest way to do that would be to have a set time to wait for the player to return, and if he DOESN'T return by that time then the game is automatically ceded to the remaining player.

In the case of 3 or four player games, I can see the relevance of having subs or bots sit in to finish out the game since there will usually be 2 or 3 of the original human players remaining in the game, and so there would be no clear-cut "winner" if the game were to be forfeited. However, in TWO-player games, there is absolutely no reason to have this feature available (unless it is maybe an option that can be set if the players WANT it...). When one of the original players has left the game, there is no reason for the remaining player to have to continue to play with a substitute or a bot, since the game is rightfully HIS at this point.

So, in this I agree with FrshVaBreeze, with the condition that there be a specified wait period for the missing player to have a chance to get back. 8)

JONAS, now I'm having a problem with a bot in a game I set; this has happened several times in the past week when I set a game and click to select a bot as my opp. The bot never moves after the initial roll. I can kick that bot and put in another, but still no moves when it's the bot's turn... :?
