feature request

Hi Jonas,

been playing spades on HW for a couple of years now, but before that i've used to play at playsite.com (RIP). Spades rules there where slightly different from those offered by HW, in two ways :

1. a 0 bid was allowed. this enables a player with a very nasty hand to get past the round w/o getting set on a nil or setting the team by not being able to make 1...
2. pass 2 cards was allowed only on a blind nil (instead of the pass game on HW which allows it on any nil). that made blind nil a much realistic tool to get back to the game from being far behind, while avoiding the pass2 game pattern in which one p bid and the other nils.

while not being "huge" changes over what is offered by HW, these 2 features stongly favors skills over luck and enables better players to win even when the cards suck...

would it be possible to incorporate these options into a future release of HW spades ?

regards,

Vitaminp

I just have a question.

How did the 0 bid differ from bidding nil in your scenario? Did you get penalized at all in the event you bid 0 and then did take a trick?

Hi Hexa.

if you bid 0, you may only get bags, but no penalty. In that way, if someone gets a really nasty hand he can avoid the risk of nil set / bid set by just bidding 0. it can serve also in some strategic bids - we can discus this further if you really like to.

Yup. Blind Nil, Skill. Obviously you've never tried that version of spades so you're surprised. Let me give you an example. round 1. very uneven distribution - lets say 10:2 for the opponents. One opp bids 5. ur p bids 1. second opp bids 6. bidding comes to you. you got 9,10,j of hearts and 2 low spades. what would you do on HW ? nil ? easy set on hearts. bid 1 ? probably wont make it. on playsite's version of spades, you would bid 0. Ur p would understand the bid, and try to bag the other team so that the score at the end of the round would be 111:10, or even toss his book to make the score 112:-10. the next round, you take blind nil, and pass 2 high spades to ur p - he bids 6, the other team bids 5, you make the BN and the score is evened... despite the uneven distribution of cards. So, Yes, BN can be used as a strategic tool in the hands of a skilled player to stay in the game despite bad cards - but rarely on HW - because there is no pass option on BN in regular games and taking a BN w/o option to pass is far too risky.
